Blast From The Past - Metal Detector Catalog Ads

I remember my very first metal detector.

It was made by Heathkit and you had to have a AM radio for it to work.

Am I showing my age? :D

The first reference of a "Metal Locater" appeared in the 1975 fall issue.

Not the AM radio kit you spoke of but, a couple of the HeathKit detectors

Here's a pic of my Goldmaster and the guy from the instruction manual. He was very helpful! It was my first metal detector, I tried to just put it together and go.....didn't work out so well! Definately need to read those old manuals before trying to use one!

Thanks AWU for your post!

Mustang

I had the Jetco Mustang when I was a boy. I think that if I look hard enough I could dig it out of my attic.
thanks for posting the old ads,

The Jetco line of detectors must have been quite the detector to justify a full page color ad in 1970. Included in this ad is your "Mustang". Thanks for the memories Flapjack!

The Mustang that I had was the one with the round coil and only took one 9v battery, not two. It didn't have that "Fancy" square coil like the one pictured above.
thanks again,
Flapjack

EDIT: May be this one is more to your liking Flapjack...

That Whites TR -Discriminator from the 1979 Sears catalog was my first detector around 80 or 81. I begged my parents for that starting the day the catalog showed up. It turned out to be a pretty good deal for them. It kept me entertained for a few years and out of their hair. I had a few good finds with it to. The best an 1843 Large Cent and 1906 Barber Dime (I have both in a frame).

WOW.

I forgot about the second pic of the heathkit. I had that one Tooooo!

Talk about a pull tab locator! LOL.

Thanks AWU for your post!
i was relieved when i got my traker 4.i would let my buddy use the whites and i think he got turned off of the hobbie because the thang is heavy(his first find was a 44 wheat). when i got water in my traker 4 coil i switched back to my whites and my wrist started hurting.i had a tigershark on its way, i cant wait to take it out to the lake in spring.luckly my bountyhunter dried out, i use it most the time.still trying to master the tigershark.

Thats really something. My Mother-in-law still has her Bounty Hunter that looks very similer to the ones shown. Next time I'm over there I will need to check it out a little closer.

Oh wow, I had a Relco "Frontiersman". It was probably the most awful detector ever made. You had to take a screwdriver and open up the case just to change the battery. It drifted so badly you could only sweep back and forth a few times before you had to retune it. If you were lucky, you'd find a penny or two just under the surface of the ground but that was about it. I don't know how those guys slept at night selling a piece of junk like that.

The olden days!!

Hey, I used one of those Bounty Hunter Outlaws when they first come out. I love that picture of the guys with that monster, and them in the 3 piece suits:lol: And that shovel???? Now that's how I would detect a nice manicured park lawn. You could even use it as a weapon if someone wanted to jump you:lol::lol:

In 1972 that White's Goldmaster 66 T was the cats meow to me when I was a kid. My Uncle used one while I was using/dragging that old govt. surplus mine detector around. My mine detector was so heavy I would drop the thing and gladly do his digging for him. Even the much hated Relco had to be better than what I had.

My next detector after the Relco was a White's 66TR. Man, it was like going from a Yugo to a Cadillac. What a beautiful detector!

The old White's 66T is still in the family. I inherited it from my uncle and then I gave it to my sister. The thing still works every bit as good as when he first bought it.
