AT-Pro vs diamond earring...

Fog, you might substitute a coil on your AT Pro as a quick check of your connector. My stock coil ended up having an intermittent connector. At times, the VDI was blank, exactly the same condition as if you had the machine on, with the coil disconnected. Sent the machine and coil to Garrett and they returned the coil with a different connector. Works fine now. Just an idea.

have to ask please tell me what a VDI is ??? dont want to sound stupid lol

Today I tried to help a lady who had lost a diamond earring. She had posted a request for help on the Lost My Stuff Group indicating the earring was in one of two places... either in a small area of her backyard lawn or in her dachshound puppy's stomach!!!

Well, hoping for the easiest solution I first scanned the puppy's tummy using both my AT-Pro and my Pro-Pointer... no beeps, no VDI readings, nothing.

So, I then take the matching earring and go to scan it with the AT-Pro (my plan being to discriminate everything but the earring signal before I started scanning in the back lawn). With the AT-Pro in STD Zero mode and no discrimination at all I first located a piece of clean ground reading a steady VDI of Zero, and then scanned the earring at that location.... scanning the earring I continue to get a steady of VDI of Zero...???

Confused, at this point I scan the earring with my Pro-Pointer... no beeps there either, even with the earring in contact with the tip... ???

Needless to say I didn't find the lady's earring...

Any ideas ??? Is there such a thing as too small to detect, even when up close and personal ???

Visual Discrimination Indicator

It's the numbers on the screen of metal detectors that helps to identify what an object below the coil is.
On the ATpro it is the number in the red box labeled target I D.

Here are some more metal detecting definitions:

I have toyed with the same type tests with the White's detectors. My older sl will not pick up an earing unless it is in all metal mode. My M6 will pick it up no problem. They run on a different frequency and that is the key.

Just thinking out of the box here, do you have a dedicated MD retailer that you could rent a demo unit capable of finding an earring for say $30 for the day or putting up one of your detectors as collateral? This is also a good way for a retailer to generate some good local PR.
Here in the Twin Cities we have two shops that only sell MDs. I'm not sure how common that is.
