AT Pro Newbies... Talk to me

Buy the 5x8 coil, very big difference from the stock. Garrett should have sold it with the at pro. The large coil picks up so much for beginners. It is hard to learn with that big of a coil.

I dont know if I want to deal with swapping the coils out. Maybe I should look into a tesoro compadre for things like tot lots?

That is a great machine but once you put the 5x8 on your at pro you won't take it off!

You guys have got me wanting to get that 5x8. I read somewhere that coils do not come with the cable, if that is so is it easy to take the cable off the other coil, looks like it is built into it to me, just wondering.

Yes the coil comes with the cable for the At Pro. You just unplug the stock from the control box like you would with the headphones.

I believe you are mistaken. I have yet to see a coil that wasnt permanently attached to a cable.

You don't unplug the cable from the coil itself. You unplug the cable that comes with the stock coil. The 5x8 has a cable that you plug into the control box. (just like your stock coil)

The only advice I have is bring extra batteries and come dig with "Gold digger" aka Terry Soloman, and I.... Just saying! Good luck in the mean time!!!

Yes all coils I have seen have cables permanently attached. I meant the coil cable is not.

Went out today and hit a bunch of dimes and quarters. Love this machine. I'm still getting fooled
on the cans. What I did notice was coins usually were in my plug (first 3inches) and anything deeper
Was Budweiser.

I just sent Larry at NWI an email this morning. I'm ready to make a purchase on the AT! Glad I found this thread, very helpful stuff.:good:

That is good news thanks.

Ok I knew I read that some where, go to this link and read under IMPORTANT NOTICE, and see for yourself, that is why I was asking....

Manufactures DO NOT include connecting hardware set with purchase of search coils or lower rods. You can use the connecting hardware supplied with your present metal detector or purchase another hardware set and/or Lower rod below.

What that means is that it will not come with the nylon hardware to attach the coil to the stock shaft. There is no need for extras unless you lose yours all the time. Only one coil can fit a machine at a time (depending on machine). So you're good. The cable is attached. There is no coil that does not come with a cable... unless it's a wireless coil similar to XP Dues machines.

The thread referred to the At Pro GOLD

The link I posted is not referring to the AT Pro Gold, it's referring to the 5x8 coil. The 5x8 coil is the OEM (original equipment or standard) coil for the ATP Gold, but is sold separately for the AT Pro, which is what you own and I am referring to. I do not own an AT Pro Gold, just the very first edition AT Pro and a 5x8 coil.

Yes you are correct, I read the thread wrong.. My bad...ADD here. I didn't know the 5x8 is an AT Pro Gold coil. When I ordered mine through NED, I just told him I needed an AT Pro 5x8 Coil and cover. I had just purchased the At Pro package from him recently. I wasnt aware of the coil being for the Gold. I've read something about the gold having issues with fittings.

Not sure what fittings you are referring to. So far from all the tests and reviews I have done/seen there are no major issues.
