Trying to understand

Being a Freemason, is it a religion, cult, club , or status? I have so many questions about it. The symbols, hand shakes , secrets, rituals ,degrees, make it seem dark. It almost sounds to me ,by what you said in the previous posts, that if your a Mason , you are one of gods chosen ones. Do you gain this through the Masonic Temple or are you born this way. I am not trying to stir up anything, I am just trying to educate myself. My uncle belonged to the lodge and at his funeral, the brothers were talking in tongues. People fear what they don't know.

Although I have yet to join I have been doing a fair bit of research,
although nothing that will spoil it for me at my first meeting.
You can find out most things about the Masons online, although don't
believe all you read.

See the video here, and look at some of the links on the left.

The only "secrets" are signs of recognition. Nothing dark or sinister about it. We take good men, and make them better.

Don't believe everything that media and hollywood tell you. They have no clue.

I have watched the Mason episode that has been on the History a couple of times and it makes a person wonder if there isn't a dark side, my brother who has been a Mason for a number of years says all the "not so good" stuff you hear about the Masons is not true . I do know that the Mason supports some good organizations I think one of the big ones is the Shriners.

Free Masonry Is the Worlds oldest Fraternity. Everything we do, we do for the betterment of our communities with a strong Emphasis on Children. The Shriner's Hospital is our biggest charity, to be a Shriner, you must first become a Master Mason. We are Not a Secret Society. We are a Brotherhood. We are Loyal to our fellow Brothers, and to be one all you have to do is ask one, we do not discriminate any man over the age of 18, regardless of Religion, Color or Creed. You Only have to believe in a higher Power or deity, be it God, Buddha, Allah, you just have to believe in something higher then yourself. Atheist cannot be Mason's

The answers you gave to the questions asked about Masonry makes me proud to be your brother!

Several of my family members are/were Masons

I have never been in the Masons, but several of my family members are or were during their lifetime. All of them were very good, honest, and dependable people. Through the Shrine hospitals, the Masons do a tremendous amount of good works.
I know that many people join the Masons in the hopes of improving their business contacts and connections. I think that they usually demit before very long.
Having said all that, I will mention that some of my Mom's ancestors were the guys who stood trial in the "Morgan Affair".

Family stories conflict on what actually happened and whether they were guilty or not, or if there even was a murder committed.

The judicial record of the proceedings are somewhat peculiar, according to my Aunt who dug through them.

It did add a footnote to American history, and gave our family an interesting topic to talk about at family re-unions.

Thanks,
John Morton

Some famous US Masons

More than a few famous Masons were U.S. Presidents
including Washington, Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Polk,
Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Garfield, McKinley, Taft,
Theodore Roosevelt, Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt,
Harry S. Truman, and Gerald R. Ford.

Freemasons were instrumental and participated in the
American Revolution. Just a few more from that era
include: Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Paul Revere,
and John Paul Jones.

Some well known military leaders were also famous masons:
George C. Marshall, Gen. Omar Bradley, John J. Pershing,
Douglas McArthur, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle.

The fight for the Republic of Texas included fellow masons
Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and
Santa Ana.

Many famous masons made a good living in Hollywood such
as actors John Wayne, Burl Ives, Roy Rogers, Danny Thomas,
Ernest Borgnine, Red Skelton, Clark Gable, Will Rogers,
Audie Murphy, and Gene Autry.

I'm a PM of Fidelity St Johns #3 in Fairfield CT Instituted 1762.

To the folks who were wondering if the Masons are sinister, or a cult, no.

They don't screen people out based on religion, though you do need to believe in a supreme being to join.

Otherwise, if you apply to join, there will be a basic effort to check into your reputation in the hopes of screening out jerks and scoundrels.

Masons do tend to treat each other like family. We have something in common with each other, and if you know someone is a mason, you know a basic level of trust is reasonable.

Did my second degree back in January, and am really enjoying it.
I wish I'd started a long time ago.
