In the winter of 1982 - 83 (so I would have been 21 yrs. old), the coast of CA was getting raked by big storms. That lasted 3 to 4 months straight. Ie.: Every ~2 weeks, for the entire winter, it seemed another monster swell was hitting us. So go figure that by Dec. and January, the show & tell table, at our monthly club meeting (we had a club back in those years), was littered with rings and beach silver !

And it was exactly at this time that a newbie elderly retired couple joined and attended their first meeting. They had JUST bought a detector, and had never even used it yet. So as the 30 or so attendees gathered around the show & tell tables, the new people heard all the chit-chat buzz about "the beach this" and the "beach that", blah blah. So naturally, it occurred to them that they better get to the beach. They gathered a few pointers from what they could over hear, and whomever they could fish for tips from.

The very next day (as the storms were still hot & heavy), they showed up on the beach where everyone else had been talking about at the meeting the night before . They look down from the parking lot, and saw several md'rs down there digging like crazy. So ... naturally .... they head to the zone and likewise begin digging hot & heavy.

So on THEIR VERY FIRST DAY they had something like 5 gold rings ! In addition to silver coins, etc... You can imagine that they were very pleased with their newfound hobby. The next day, they were back down again to the same beach to meet all their newfound friends. AND AGAIN went home with 5 gold rings. And everyone around them had gold rings and silver coins to show back and forth to each other too. Needless to say, the newbie couple were again delighted with day #2 of their newfound hobby.

On day #3, my buddy arrived at the beach, and was getting suited up to start hunting. And as he did, this new couple came marching up from the beach into the parking lot. He recognized them as the new couple from the club meeting. And could see they were loading their gear into their car. Ie.: As if they were leaving. So he walked over and asked them: "Is it any good today ?" To which they replied "No. It's no good. We *only* got 2 gold rings today".

This mystified my friend as to how/why they spoke disparagingly of "2 gold rings". But later on, we put 2+2 together, and realized that they must have simply thought that 5 gold rings in a day was some sort of norm. Such that, shucks, if you *only* get 2 gold rings, then gee, it must not be a good day, eh ?

2 rings. 5 rings. Lol. Back in the Glory of Gold days forsure. The few guys I saw back then seldom mentioned "How many gold rings did you find ?" No..No...No... It was "How many OUNCES did you find ?" Lots of fatties and honkers back then. We could do the math in our head and at a glance. Knowing that the typical ounce was about 3-5 rings give or take the occasional 18-20 Grammer ! So imagine not seeing another hunter for 5 weeks and he tells you he's found 6.5 oz. This didn't happen all the time , but enough to keep you hooked. Also remember , gold was cheap back then. Ok....I'm crying now.😭😭😭
