Silverware handle silver or not

Hello all! I am a novice hunter from Ohio and recently I found this silverware handle near a old homesite in Southern Ohio. I believe it is silver but it has a strange rot or corrosion on one side. Can anyone help me identify the age or composition of this handle?

Probably not silver

In my experience when digging silver out of the ground, it looks pretty much the same as the day it went into the ground. I would say it is not silver.
