I was going thru some of my finds and come across this thing I had forgot about it. That same hunt I found several buttons and two matrons. Every thing from this site has been old late 1700s to the latest dateable thing was a civl war eagle I button.

Seems like a "keeper" for a small strap. If I had to guess I would think both tabs were the same until one broke off.

Here is a CW belt keeper that makes me think it is similar, but worn with the decorative side out.
