I was videoing a storm from our back yard after dark and caught this lightning strike. The structure is my shop and it hit an Oak tree 100 yards from it. Yep, a little too close...lol! I can't explain the blue streak coming down the tree on the right. I guess it's some sort of reflection in the lens, who knows....

This is another strike that occurred 1 minute before the one above. Strange that it struck almost the same points. I wish it was of better quality. That said, I need a nice camera!

Holy smokes! Yeah I'd be running for shelter after seeing that . Great pictures by the way. Scary but great.

Great stills from video , nice job finding the exact frames!

Thanks! It was really difficult finding the exact frame of the first strike (second post), I am talking like only 1ms! The close/intense strike lasted a couple of frames.

Closest I have been to a strike is about 100 ft. Amazing how you can go from 6' tall to 6" tall and outrun an Olympian. I don't have much hair, but what I had was standing straight up and buzzing.:?::shock::wow: Awesome shots you got there. Well done.

In that first picture, KT thinks the "blue streak" is another lightening bolt, just a bit less powerful, but still strong enough to kill ya!

As for running, when you see it, its too late to run! Ha ha. Sure shows you why you should not stand under a tree during a thunderstorm! Great pics!

That is also a good reason to seek shelter quickly when your detector starts speaking to you about lightning. Mine will false before you can see lightning over the horizon.

Wow, nice job catching that happening!

Those sort of nearby strikes freak me out -- you'd almost swear the sound got there before the light. I like to time the flash vs the boom -- last week I had one counted up to 20+ seconds then KER-BOOM rattled my house like crazy. 20 seconds is 4 miles away -- holy cow -- WHAT was that like where it actually hit the ground? No survivors!

Did the tree (or anything else) catch fire?

Wow, neat pics !!!!

You definitely want to play it safe when it comes to lightning !

Reminded me of this past edit

......smart detectorists know when to quit and try again another day !
