Wondering if anyone is bored and wants to help me figure out where this coin is from. I'm a brand new metal detectorist and I got super super lucky on my very first beach hunt. I think I've found a Spanish coin from pre 1700s but not 100% sure of the year or info. Can anyone point me in the right direction for getting more details about it?

Looking at the pictures I think I see splitting edges, corrosion, and it looks like the proverse photo has copper glinting in the flash. This all points to a fake coin. Unfortunately these turn up everywhere. Gotta keep hunting though for the real ones!

Since I'm a novice how does splitting edges point to fake? I found this submerged in about 1 ft underwater buried 6 inches in a rocky sand bed. From the research I've done so far, albeit not too much yet, the coin resembles "Phillipvs" which points me to the Spanish coins. I have a hard time believing this find is fake since it was found in a very unpopulated area in the great lakes region and buried underwater. Open to opinions though so thank you. I'm wondering if I should get if authenticated.

It's fake. In the first picture down at about the 5 o'clock position you can see the letters COP of COPY. They are fairly common touristy items...

this coin would have been a large chunk of silver, if real, not plated or clad in any way. the copy is a clad coin with different layers of other metals mixed together. they are splitting apart since some of those layers are building up corrosion in between.

Fantastic work everyone! Thanks for the help. I did clean the coin with toothbrush and toothpick, and I definitely agree that it says copy. So much for getting my hopes up!!! Is this coin worth anything other than for the laughs?

Still a cool find! Sometimes it's fun to just have the feeling of.... "This might be something spectacular!" Believe me, I've dug lots of "coulda, woulda, shouldas" Some of those plated gold rings look REAL good coming out of the dirt. Don't let it deter you. The next nice find is just around the corner. Is it worth anything? Nah. If I found it, I'd hold on to it though. Fun memory regardless. Keep posting your finds!

Probably not worth much at all unfortunately, those fake cobs are very common, especially the closer you get to the treasure coast. Still a cool find, I cant say I've found a fake or genuine cob yet.

Sometimes ya find stuff you think is treasure and its junk. And sometimes you find something you think is junk and it turns out to be the coolest thing found all day! Always check your finds before throwing them away. If in doubt of what it is, keep a "mystery bucket". Sometimes someone else finds the same thing and it gets identified for them, and it tells you what youve found.

I found one in a curb strip in Bellingham Washington.

You can see copy on top left of bottom pic on mine. They sell these all over Florida from what I have been told.

Real or fake still a very cool find. Congrats. We're all in this for treasure, what the treasure is worth is sometimes secondary. I would love to find one of those. Good luck, Mark
