If your freebee is this one: https://www.metaldetector.com/pinpointer-probe-by-bounty-hunter-teknetics, then the cheap Chinese knockoffs/generics from eBay should perform better than the freebee you got.

My whites pinpointer kicked the bucket and I had picked one of these up on craigslist for $10 new... it is pretty junky as you mentioned... sensitivity very poor... I usually only use it now for when the target is removed from the ground and I cannot see it... But definitely as mentioned avoid this one...
