I went to iron beach and saw 8 inch or so wingspan rays in the clear water, there were 7 of them just sitting on the bottom of 1 foot water. I wanted to pet them but nope, not going to get wet.
All I got was a pizza shaped ring made of junk metal.

About 2-3 2eeks ago I was able to get a small one in my scoop. I thought it was pretty cool. I had tried a few times over the years but this was my 1st successful catch & release.

Stingrays are a real danger, hurts like the dickens if you get hit with the spine on their tail. I've been hit 3 times badly and grazed many more, gotta remember to do the stingray shuffle in the water!
Recently in my area there was red tide and many rays fled the red tide in to a popular beach area and in 1 day 8 people got hit before the local authorities decided to not allow swimming until the red tide passed.

This time of year they catch some massive rays here. They may spend an hour reeling one in? Stinks when you are fishing by them for Whiting and you get tangled up for an hour.

They're actually fairly intelligent, there's a couple of massive ones where I dive sometimes that come over to me and check out what I'm doing. they have 3 or 4 6 inch barbs on their tails so I certainly don't swim over and give them a cuddle, but I've had them come up behind me and nudge my feet.

SCREW stingrays. They HURT. They are ALL over San Diego. You'll learn how to do the stingray shuffle in no time! I even bought some RayGuards and Ray boots... But they still scare you when they slither at your feet after you've been nailed once or twice.

I see stingrays almost every time I'm out in the water. Maybe the ones in Florida are shyer but I don't see how I could ever have an issue with one when my coil is swinging back and forth like ClearwaterMike states.

When the beach is eroded enough that it's down to medium sized rocks in sections that you have to step over and around.. Flat surfaces and rays are easy (ish), throw in a patches of rock gardens and it's game on.
