If you saw my two previous posts about the dump where I've been finding marbles, I went back there today. Rained recently, but as I've been digging on a very steep hill it wasn't muddy.
Found a couple ACL bottles and a nicely embossed screw cap wine bottle...Was in a bit too much of a hurry when I pulled the wine out and broke a piece off of the lip, so I will try to hide that with a scavenged whiskey cap.
Also some more interesting costume jewelry coming out of the hill. And then...
Found a partially burnt/melted handbag of some sort of plastic material. Almost tossed it aside as it was quite flat but decided to peel it open.
A little coke bottle fell out. The thing comes apart and I am not sure exactly what it it. Maybe a lipstick tube?? It has a brass tube within.
I peeled open another layer and saw a circle stuck to the plastic. Upon pulling it off, I realized that it was a nickel! Looking closely I believed I saw a "V". Took it over to the spot where I had my backpack and my keepers, looked at it in the sun, and confirmed I had a V-Nickel. How cool!!
Went back to the handbag and peeled the compartment some more...and there was a BIG round coin or token. Pulled it out, wiped it a couple times, and saw Liberty.......I have never found a silver dollar of any kind ever metal detecting, and here I was digging in a dump and found one. I believe my surprised curses are still echoing through that woods...
After a a bit, I moved back under a large rock where I had been finding lots of marbles, and found four more of them and some more costume jewelry. I was getting pretty far under the boulder, and it was starting to look precarious, so I was just lightly scraping the roof of my tunnel to see if any marbles would fall out. And this big old round coin plopped down right in front of me.
Took a bit of water and rubbing but I realized I now had a Peace Dollar to add to the day's Morgan!
Well, I did get busy on the boulder and got it moved and rolled down the hill. No more coins or marbles today, but I can assure you I'll be back...
As for my ACL's, the only one that survived was the Royal Crown. Just like every other Hi Klas I have found, the ACL started coming off when I tried to clean it. And the Nehi (which was in better condition that the dug Nehi I currently have displayed) took a roll while I was cleaning things and smashed on the basement floor.... Oh well. And the Atlas jar had a can stuck to it, so if I get enough rusty bottles to warrant filling a bucket with muriatic acid again, I'll give it a bath and take that rust off.
A few questions. First, anybody recognize that little Coca Cola bottle thing?
Further, thoughts on cleaning those dollars? The cleanup photos are after using a toothbrush with dish soap. I have an electrolysis setup for iron, and I recall reading people talk about silver and electrolysis... is it the same method? My only other option I can think of is the old Scotch pad (which I did use on the nickel prior to the cleanup photos..)
I might leave the Morgan as it is either way, but that Peace Dollar needs some help...
