I don't think I'll be able to ever top this one. 😳 It's beat up and rolled but it stopped me in my tracks. At first I thought it was just a piece of gold jewelry. Went over to my buddy who was also detecting with me, and showed and asked him if this is gold, so we started spraying it to clean it and, the letters "ATES OF" appeared. Obviously, my knees weekend. Words can't describe what I felt. Lol

Dug it last Friday and yesterday, I decided to unroll and flatten it to see the obverse. And yeah, it's almost totally beat up but a gold coin is a gold coin. 😁

FYI, taking a photo of a very small gold coin using a smartphone is insanely difficult. LOL

Incredible find! Congratulations and it's interesting to think about who owned this and why was it rolled up so tightly?

Very cool! I'm holding out hope that gold (in any way shape or form) will find its way to my swinging detector coil!

Super congrats !!!!

Regardless of condition simply digging any gold coin would seem to be a pretty rare find and I think most of us detectorists would be thrilled even if it was in rough condition !

A find like that deserves a marching band !

Wow! Can you compare it to any other gold coins in a coin book?

With the "CA", does that make it a San Francisco Mint coin??

Good research cellrdwellr !!!!

That page you shared showed 2 versions and BlueHuntsCoins coin seems to be the large head version.

from the link above that cellrdwellr shared:

LARGE INDIAN HEAD GOLD DOLLARS (1856-1889)

1861-D Gold Dollar example.jpg

Here is another page about those coins:

https://coinvalues.com/large-head-indian-princess-gold-dollar

from the above page:

(quote)
Indian Princess Large Head gold dollar coins are not scarce as a type, meaning there are plenty of pieces available to those who are simply looking for a representative piece for their collections. However, there are several rare issues in the series, including all proof coins, and several individual dates, such as 1856-D, 1861-D, and 1875 gold dollar coins.
(end quote)

......since it says "Indian Princess Large Head gold dollar coins are not scarce as a type" you might want to hunt that area some more just in case there might be another around there, whoever dropped that could had dropped another one !

Wow ! Congrats on a killer find ! Hmmm..... a hole so it could be worn around the neck
and the coin being rolled up ? I'm wondering if this is an old coke snorting device from some old pioneer junkie ?

Blue , your photos are awesome !

Money is not the root of all evil, it's "love of money".

And that indeed could be the find of a lifetime, good for you!
