This falls under Research. Among my hobbies is Geocaching.

When some one places a cache, they are obligated to get permission to place it. A lot of my MDing areas come from finding a geocache which was placed in an out of the way area that I would not have known about if not for the geocache.

Equipment needed is minimal. There are hand held GPS units, but most smart phones have apps that will serve very well. There is no fee on the website for just the basics. There is a premium service that lets you download data directly to your phone or hand held GPS.

When out in the woods, I have found quite a few geocaches. Everything from smiley pet rocks to ziplock bags with miscellaneous worthless junk inside. Next time I pass 'em, they're gone. I see 'em because I've trained my eye to look for "what doesn't belong" , whick is one way I spot old bottles/dumps.

I have found quite a few geocache while fishing and metal detecting. I always try to put something in them, and sign the book.
