All,

Hunting again in a known union campsite, found the pictures ace head about 14” down and mingled in with some green glass that appears 19th century to my untrained eye. I know ace heads are almost impossible to date by shape alone, so curious if anyone sees the structure of the metal (after electrolysis) as a way to guesstimate age. It’s in bad shape, but specifically wondering about the striations in the metal below the rust.

Thank you!

Paul

in logging they would use one axe head as a splitter. and beat the heck out of it, until it broke at times. Some were hand forged. But the cutting edge was hardened steel. applied when the two sides met. Congrats on a good find.

Looks like a Soldiers to me, period axes where forged (striations) and formed with one piece if iron and seamed together in the back like yours appears. Found with glass means you could have located a camp pit or even a Soldiers camp hut if they camped there in winter. Grab a big shovel and go investigate.
