Few bits today.
2 X musket balls one of which has struck something.
1884 half penny.
Button.
Nice decorative piece, certainly looks medieval, pity just a fragment but well pleased with finding it.

Hi groundsweeper.
Yes i take the weight and circumference and mark them.
Easier for trying to find a date for them , you know what like we all are for forgetting things...well me anyway.
Going by what i have found research wise these are mostly civil war balls ( UK ) so around the 1640s.
I also find great lumps of lead so not sure if perhaps it was to be used to make balls and was lost or had been used for something else.

Thanks Tabdigger.
Remember its only the good stuff i show, i have around 3 tonne of junk !!
Im lucky to live right next to land that has had a motte and Bailey castle, a railway line opened in 1858 ( now gone ) and a drainage ditch dug in 1785.
Archeology reports say the castle area has been used for around 2500 years so the land has been worked for much the same time, although much was under water as low level and this was used to create a natural moat around the castle until 1785 when the ditch was dug to drain the land and increase crop production.
I have added a few pics and i hope members dont mind , it just gives you an idea of what im talking about ( hopefully )
Top left is the Motte on which a wooden fortification would of stood but by 1300 this would of changed to a stone fortification, in front would of been the baily which was defended by a wooden palisaide, castle workers would live within the bailey, in the pic at around 1 o clock in the background is the castles docot used to roost birds so eggs could be eaten or the birds this was built around 1450. Top right is the great ditch dug in 1785 to drain the land. Btm left also the great ditch and the embankment created was where they put the railway line. Btm right is what parts of the land still look like, the Gaelic name for this place means place of the rushes or reeds so always been wet.

Thanks for sharing the cool finds, and for the mini tour of the area with the pics! Fantastic history - just boggles my mind in comparison to the time frames I'm working with here in Ohio! What I wouldn't give to have just a couple hours to hunt in your area ;)

Many thanks for the kind words guys.
Worth noting that the mound the castle was on is not a natural feature and was basically put there. Its amazing to think of them doing this 2500 years ago using wooden shovels, it is thought to be roughly half the original size due to erosion and farming . The drainage ditch must of been bad enough to dig by hand in 1785 but at least they had iron shovels.
Everything on my album page has been found within a half mile from that mound. There have been proper archeological digs in the past and they found mostly middens ( spoil pits ) containing mostly animal bone and pottery which had been discarded. A beautifully decorated bronze plate from the 1300s was found in the 1930s and this is in the Royal Scottish museum and i have in past years watched many folk detecting the area with no luck. Of course the land has been ploughed many times since then and it always seems to throw up items. 15 years ago permission was given to build houses across all the land !! this eventually fell through because of the drainage issues. So i have no feeling of guilt finding stuff here. If the landowners got there way it would all of been under concrete and tarmac.
And friends, anyone who does get over here will always have a place to rest his detector and his head. Happy hunting.
