So my husband removed a big box elder stump and found two soda bottles about four feet down.

One was a '52 coke bottle as there was a date on the side.

The other was a green bottle I'm thinking might be a 7-up? It has slight texture at the shoulder and neck of very tiny dots.

I chose to post this here instead of the ID section as there are more bottle people here. Hope it is okay. Thanks for any help.

Penny

Thank you for that word "stippling."

It might be the same, although the stippling on this bottle only goes to the shoulder and it looks like the bottle in your picture the stippling goes to below the shoulder.

It's a possibility. Thanks for the reply!

Penny, probably not 7-up, as they didn't have side texture. It probably was paper-labeled, which is now gone. Could be a lemon-lime or ginger ale type drink. Looks like it's 12 oz or smaller and I think I can see Duraglas 57 (?) which is a trademark of Owens-Illinois glass co.

Thanks for the reply! I will look up some ales but sounds like i'll have to just keep wondering! LOL.

This particular sub-heading is "Caches, Old Bottles, and other Treasures, so it belongs here. If you don't like this subject being on the metal detecting forum you could take it up with one of the moderators.

There is even a category for family friendly topics if you want to talk about weather and Covid.

Bubble up?

First I've heard of Bubble up. Googled it and it looks like the bottles varied but some pictures look very similar. The bottom Duraglass is the same. Could be.

Embossed bottles are the best, there's no mistaking them. Thanks for the reply.

To me it looks like a 10 oz returnable bottle - the kind of bottle commonly sold in soda machines into the 1980's and perhaps a bit later. The color leads me to think lemon-lime soda or perhaps ginger ale.

I don't recognize the bottle as being a specific brand - but then again I'm not knowledgeable about bottles.

Some brands you might check into (not previously mentioned) - based on lemon-lime type drinks and the assumption that the bottle was sold somewhere in WV or thereabouts

Upper 10
Ale 8
Dr. Enuff
Teem
Sun Crest
Kickapoo Joy Juice
Mountain Dew (prior to Pepsico owning the brand)
Sun Drop

If you can find information on the brands carried by area distributors in the late 1950's to the late 1960's you might be able to narrow the possible brand down.

I was going from memory.Bubble Up was a lemon lime drink popular in the South mostly, along about the late 50,s into the 60,s.

It’s from a 1957 bottle run. With duraglass bottles, the number to the right is the year. The 7 means it was made at the Alton, Ill factory and the top number is the style of bottle.
There were a ton of companies that used this bottle

10-4 great info.

Of the brands somebody mentioned above, I checked my collection and I can say it's not Upper 10, Teem, Sun Crest, or Mountain Dew.

I can't say about the others, but there were SO many brands out there in 1957 that bottle could be any number of obscure old brands.

Maybe someone else reading this thread can shed more light...

Penny, is there any ghosting of an old painted label showing at all?

Hey Glasshopper. I googled all the bottles that Tahtsadatsaco mentioned and a few of them have stippling but not the same kind of stippling. I know what you mean by "ghosting" because a few days ago I looked close at some other bottles and noticed faint but readable labels. This doesn't seem to have any ghosting, but i'll look at it tomorrow in day light.

This has that same stippling on it

This is the closest to it as far as the stippling.

Bubble up?

I actually have heard of "Bubble up." Merle Haggard song:

There's a big, brown cloud in the city
And the countryside's a sin
The price of life is too high to give up
It's gotta come down again

But worldwide war is over and done
And the dream of peace comes true
We'll all be drinkin' that free Bubble Up
And eatin' that rainbow stew

When they find out how to burn water
And the gasoline car is gone
When an airplane flies without any fuel
And the sunlight heats our home

But one of these days when the air clears up
And the sun comes shinin' through
We'll all be drinkin' that free Bubble Up
And eatin' that rainbow stew

Eatin' rainbow stew in a silver spoon
Underneath that sky of blue
We'll all be drinkin' that free Bubble Up
And eatin' that rainbow stew

Yes "Bubble Up" was pretty good, but IDK if it's still around or not.

I been trying to think of that song ever since I read this post,Thanks for that!

Solved!

I started looking real close for any "ghost writing" like Glasshopper mentioned.
If you hold the bottle toward something dark, with daylight behind you there are a few very dim letters. U p p e r...nothing after that because of scratches in the glass. Below that in smaller letters is "lime-lemon."

Most sodas would say "lemon-lime." Has to be Upper 10!

Thanks for ALL the help! Learned a lot about old brands!

Penny

I believe Upper 10 was a Nehi Brand (RC Cola). I think it has been shelved now that RC is owned by Keurig. I could be wrong though, as the soft drink industry has gone through all sorts of turmoil with most brands begging for the few scraps that are left over (market share) by Coke and Pepsi.
