From the looks of it, if a person post a good detecting video on yewtoob they hardly get any views. For some reason the machine just doesn't promote many long videos. However, that same subject condensed into a yootewb shorts video can get 100 views per minute. This is bad news. The problem is that the shorts format must be recorded in vertical portrait mode and less than 60 seconds long. I fear that the mass promotion and use of this format is going to shorten people's attention span and reduce their attention to detail to neanderthal levels. The shorts video format robs the content of its background, its scenery, its story and meaning. In a sense, meaningful things put on utoob shorts becomes a type of cognitive low-resolution noise. This graph shows a short video that I posted. You can see that the machine is recommending this video and it has explosive growth. Jus as quickly as it started youtube kills the video and it's no longer viewed. I think that what's actually happening is that the system analyzes viewer engagement and decides whether this will be the next million view video and then decides to stop promoting it if it doesn't sense the precursors of those viral videos. I think that the end result of the mass use of this format is that people will come to expect everything to be some kind of "short" format. Anything that is not is going to be perceived as too boring or difficult to think about. Thats bad! View attachment 575935

Yeah, looks like YouTube wants to be like TikTok. Other than a select few channels that I like to watch, I’ve got burned out on YouTube. Way too much click bait and dishonesty from money hungry content creators. Way too many people talking down to their subscribers like a bunch of know-it-all’s too. For whatever reason, these also seem to be the type of channels YouTube likes to promote.

I have the perfect solution - Don't watch any detecting videos, short or long, far better to go out and detect yourself [unless you have a new machine and are looking for quick tips to get up to speed] Short of that, they are a near total waste of precious time.

Well, you tube is my cyber toolbox. Seems like any time I have a problem I can't figure out, the answer is on you tube. As far as the rest of that goofy crap, I have no use for it. But I'll bet they all have a million hits. I'm into the technical videos. Once in a while I will watch funny ones. Oh, and I also love to listen to the music and some of the spooky stories.

I am a 'Social Media Coordinator' by job title now... previously a video producer for TV/Film...

YT is in fact pushing shorts at the algorithm level. Long-form videos are in fact becoming more and more pushed aside and/or demonetized. They're starting to monetize the shorts, so you will see a lot more of them. More videos watched (short form) the more advertising YT pushes out, the more money they bring in. Long form videos are quickly declining all across the board.

And.... it's going to get worse. TikTok is underfire at the government level, their stocks are dropping, SnapChat stocks are up, YT will benefit greatly if TikTok gets banned in the US, so expect many many more shorts in the future.

BTW, over 85% or so of social media is done via mobile, so expect more of the vertical/portrait videos... it's the new norm. Hope you didn't buy expensive wide screens recently... you'll have to mount them on their sides now. :)

EDIT: On a personal level. I myself am struggling to find a way to include shorts in my daily. My multiple (monetized) YT channels are all long form and I have seen a decline in their performance over the past few months... I feel that creating shorts is a way to self-promote your long form content, but it's limiting on how much or what you can say .

Not a big fan of the shorts , but I have caught myself swiping for over an hour at times watching vids I wouldn't have looked for to begin with .. but I spend WAY more time on yt than I do watching anything on tv!.. TV is horrible nowadays
I'm not a big watcher of yt dig vids , especially monetized channels (avoid them strictly) cuz of the people who like to plant finds.... but if you like to learn about anything ...you can definitely do that on yt.
I Like exploring vids..
