Never heard of a boatswain whistle, but I dug this today in a wooded area less than a mile from my house in Woodstock GA. It was about 5"-6" deep. Apparently it's a vintage Navy boatswain whistle from WW1/WW2.

Back in the early 60s I was on a surface ship. That whistle was used every time an announcement was made. I suspect they are still in use today. Boats loved his whistle.

Nice find. Does it still whistle?

Yes, it does still whistle. In fact, the funny truth about that is that when I dug it, I thought it was some sort of drug smoking pipe or such. When I got home I washed all my finds in a bucket of water and went to blow the water out of the "pipe" stem and it rang out with this awesome whistle sound. That's when I realized it was a whistle and not a pipe. it sounds really cool. It does sound just like the openning whistle sound for Star Trek shows.

Okay, I guess my mind was in the gutter, but at first it really did look like a smoking pipe of some sort.

On Board a Destroyer in the Navy they would blow a tune on that thing to get up in the morning, Then before meals, or before an announcement. They had a different tune for everything. They're pipes looked more modern than that one though. Yours look old to me.

The information I have been able to find dates it around 1910

That’s a unique find in great shape too. I would have thought pot pipe or something myself  but I’m uneducated in that arena, but same goes for boat whistles!

Congrats!

I hear you, I too am not an expert on drug pipes, or any kind of smoking pipes, hence the reason I was so far wrong with that initial assumption. To go a step further, I have never even heard of a boatswain whistle prior to the research I did to ID this one. If it weren't for Google Lens, I would still be calling it a pipe :)

As a sidebar, for those who don't know, the word "boatswain" is pronouned "bosun".

Yeah, I did Navy time.....Roger
