Would you dig this up in your yard?

For years I had a low spot in my front yard, about 2 feet or so in diameter. I had always thought perhaps there used to be a tree there, or being an older house, an old privy location. Well I decided to probe it and could hear what sounded like wood about a foot under the soil. I pushed harder and the 5ft probe instantly hit a void. Being in the trades I have some long drill bits and decided to bore a hole through the dirt and into other parts of the wood and ran my endoscope down to take a peek. The patina item at the end of video appears not to be underwater and don't understand why. This is what I found. Stay tuned, when I make the necessary repairs I will update on what I find!
I realize the dangers of abandoned wells and actually have to replace the wood under the soil with something more permeant and/or fill the well with broken up concrete block. Initial depth test was about 20ft

That was creepy.

Be careful. I'm certain it's a portal to another dimension! :D

Well, yeah you’ve gotta dig it up now!

….wood capped wells under the surface make me nervous. If I suddenly disappear, I found one with rotten boards at an old abandoned homesite…

Maybe an old bomb shelter with a bunch of rusty cans of peaches? Or maybe a stash of cordite filled cartridges. Dig that stuff up!

I would dig that in a heartbeat. As mentioned above its probably an old cistern or something similar that was filled with junk. Cursiouly though what the video showed seemed to be well intact vs a bunch of shards. There's a youtuber in ND who digs holes like these that are packed full of hundreds of whole bottles at a time.

I am sure History Channel will be at the front door soon declaring a templar state of emergency for your lawn

The wood may be covering a manhole in concrete. It may be an old septic tank from some original house. They had no idea how to make them back in the early days of plumbing. Don't go down there without checking the air first. You could die I have heard.

Unless old bottles are worth a fortune in the US, I would fill it up and cap and off...Digging down *safely* in an old well is no easy task. Also, you have to consider if digging a hole like that is likely to cause an subsidence in your yard or to your house...

If I could figure out a contraption to try to "grab" some of the items down there, that would be a different matter...Perhaps something on the end of drain rods so you have some control?

Ok my bad, I didn't really mean "dig" it up, should've clarified. I did however get a net on a long plastic pipe and retrieve floating bottles and dropped a magnet down there. Pumping the water level down a bit too.

Yeah....I would definitely explore! Here's a well I found on a property, now covered with about a 3' diameter milling blade...I lost permission for the property, so I can't go back there currently, but it's a really old well...I found a 1777 Continental Army General Service Button on the same property.
