Thanks Simon. But a quick question for ya. Do I have to take the "backy" out of my mouth before I spit into the foil.

I would suggest you do Hoser .Also make sure your not spitting into your Sunday roast mate,dont think the wife would appreciate that to much.Kwaff you can safely do it with any coin.After about an hour take it out and buff it up with a soft cloth,,,thats all

Thats not the best way to do it with patchy items.
Get the foil, spit on the silver coin and then rub gently. It will clean before your eyes in seconds and you get the opportunity to work the heavily tarnished areas more. Try not to breath in the hydrogen sulphide gas thats given off.

If the item is really badly coated put it in aluminium foil in a heat proof container with a pinch of sodium carbonate then pour on boiling water. The tarnish will transfer to the foil. Keep checking and returning into the water until sufficiently clean.

In all cases wash well with plenty of water afterwards.
