Star/Buffalo Nickel Pin

Eyeballed this item on the surface of a trail on a 13 mile trail run around a local lake. Horses do use this trail occasionally. Looks like some type of pendant or ornament shaped like a star on the front, but the back looks like a buffalo nickel with an attachment. (It is size of a nickel) Can anyone explain this?
The strap end was on the same Trail, but not close.

My guess on the nickel is was once a cufflink. You're probably seeing the remnants of the post on the back. Cool find!

That's exactly what it is.
I have a bridle that I put together with them. They used to be commonly available in tack stores.

Yes, now I can see many examples. Not sure why the nonvisible back would look like a buff. But it was pretty cool to find stuff on a trail by eye.
