I had dug this up yesterday. Someone said it looks like it may be a patch box door. It has 51 stamped on the side of it. Could anyone give me more information on this?

Well if the rifle was a military or militia like modern day, they are doled out with a number assigned to a specific person. Possibly a part number, but if it is a PN wouldn't it be inside instead of on the face? In any event, very cool find for sure.:waytogo:

Markings for assignment *should be* on a wrist plate or on the barrel itself. I say should be because there's always people who dont follow instructions. But I have a few books on the topic (rev war focused books) and even when a wrist plate was present, some regiments would still mark the barrel instead.

If you look at the way it the tail is shaped and the curve on the butt of the rifle is shaped the side with 51 stamped on it would have been on the inside. Which makes sense for a part number to me

Most likely the 51 is the last 2 numbers of the rifle sn#, if it in fact it is part of a patch door. But I am not so sure. Font looks too modern, it's in too good of shape and just doesn't look quite right for it to be that.

1863 zouave rifle also looks to use a similar patch box and reproductions are still available apparently, however if your other finds in the area are civil war, I wouldn't call the patch box a reproduction. That's just me thinking out loud...

It was not in this good of shape when I dug it up, it was stained green and brown. Took a good bit of wire brushing to get it clean. And it was found about 10 feet away from the 2 bullets in the pictures.
