odd little items

I found a bunch of these little ferrous items at the foundations of a mid 1800s lumber mill. They all have notches on one side. They kind of resemble large Hershey kisses. Any ideas?

After reading the replies...I really do think noluckl nailed it. They appear to be rivets chiseled off which would make sense as the lumber mill was shut down and torn down sometime in the 1850s. Thanks for the replies!
