Oblong hollow brass thing

Sort of football shaped from the side but more oval from the top and bottom. One side has a circular hole, the other has a square hole. Old green brass. Wut is it???

Could it be a closet door knob? My maternal grandmother's house had knobs that looked similar to that. Her house that I remember was being built in the opening days of WWII.

Definitely an old doorknob! My house still has the square door locking plates.
