It’s a hair smaller than a Roosevelt dime. Found in a field in a colonial town. I have no idea what it is. It appears to be copper but was a very low tone on a Vanquish 540. Notice the border in the upper right of the first photo just over the hole.

It almost looks like there's something under the black covering in that first pic. It looks like a coin to me, and it would be great if it could be revealed but personally, I'd be afraid to try to uncover it because I'd surely wreck it...let's see what other think. Cool find.

Yep it looks like a holed large copper. If it was me, and it is almost impossible to see any detail, I would pick at it a little with a wooden skewer, or toothpick. But that is totally your call.

It’s only the size of a modern dime (a hair smaller). Were there any Copper coins that small way back when?

At about 4 o'clock I see a nose , mouth , eye. On the other side of that I see what appears to be a cap. My guess is a flowing hair something w/cap.

You guys were right! Three cent nickel. No detail on the head side but I can see the Roman numeral III on the back.

Nice find! I'm glad you could get the the crud off it to see what kind of coin it is. I've yet to find one of those.

I wasn’t sure what that black layer was and thought it was the coin metal coming apart. Turned out to be very thin and flaked off fairly easily. I was scared of damaging it but like one member said, “what do you have to lose”

:fmdfwelcome: Thanks for joining & sharing your find with us! You must be excited to have already discovered an 1800s coin - so soon after taking up the hobby. It's not every day that we see a three-cent nickel posted!
