Hello all, I’m new to the forum but not totally new to metal detecting. Although I will admit I’m a bit rusty. I currently have my old Garrett ATPro however I’m looking to hand that down to my daughter and move up to maybe a Minelab of some sort. I guess what I’m asking is for opinions and experience on the best coin shooter on the market. I’m willing to spend whatever it takes to get a nice coin machine. I would greatly appreciate any help with my search. Thanks in advance

Welcome from Cape Cod. Picking out the best detector you want is a challenge. There are lots of choices. I went from an eTrac to a Manticore. I considered the Deus II but went with the Manticore because I was familiar with Minelab and likes the eTrac. I needed lightweight due to a health issue. I am still learning the Manticore, but I think any new machine you pick is going to have a learning curve.

Thank you guys so much for responding. I am very happy to be here and looking forward to getting back into detecting. I’m pretty sure I have settled on the manticore. Was kind of torn between that or the CTX 3030. I think the manticore may be the way to go. I have also looked at the 900 and like all the features it offers as well.

I originally started out with a whites DFX300 and hate that I let that machine go but I felt it was time for an upgrade. The ATPro has been a decent detector but I just never had much luck finding silver with it. Plenty of wheats, just no silver. Had tons of good finds with the whites though

Like others have mentioned, most of the mid range detectors are going to have similar features....I love my Nokta Legend, but I have been looking at the Manticore as a possible future unit. Let us know what you get. I really liked my ATPro but it had some limiting factors and the Legend checked those boxes.

You can find a used nox 600 for less than you paid for that at pro.... I've had mine since released , after many over the yrs and still don't see a reason to spend any more money for a 900 or above ....
That may be cuz I know it so well and know those deep (on the edge of detection) "whisper every to or 3 swing" type of tones ...
If ya got the money ....splurge..... but it my opinion ...ya don't have to spend....especially if you can use the saved money on other stuff like a digger upgrade or pin pointer upgrade

I don't think that you could beat the Manticore if the price doesn't scare you off. I have never used one but a friend of mine just bought one. I really like Nokta detectors and I have a Triple Score. I am basically a coinshooter and only hunt for jewelry in obvious places that jewelry would get lost such as woodchip playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, or in the water at the rivers that run through my area. The Triple Score is a good intermediate machine and you get a nice package for $499. I also have a Whites V3 and have to admit that it can give you much more infomation in a dig don't dig situation. If you want to avoid trash look for a detector that has a high discrimination segment count. It will give a more accurate idea of what's under your coil. The Triple Score has 60 and I often wish it was over a hundred like my V3. Good luck with whatever you choose,

On average soil, I think the actual performance difference between the current crop of mid range detectors (Legend, Equinox, etc) and high end detectors (Manticore, Deus 2, etc) is probably marginal. The Manticore may be a little deeper than most, the Deus 2 may be a little faster, but its not gonna be a massive difference. I think something like a Legend or Equinox can probably find at least 95% of the targets a Manticore or D2 can find. What you're paying for on the higher end units is mostly the extra features like Target Trace, TID improvements, more tone options, lighter weight and maybe slightly better build quality. The only person who knows exactly what features are important is you. I'd watch some videos and read a bunch of reviews on all the machines you're interested in, then decide if those extra features & lighter weight warrants the price difference of the high end units. If money is no object, then the Manticore and D2 are both excellent choices for coin shooting. Otherwise, I think the current mid range offerings still give ya a lot of bang for the buck.

Nokia is one I have not looked at very hard. Just don’t know a lot about them is why. I have always wanted a CTX3030 and was planning to buy that one and that’s when I saw the manticore. I will take a look at nokta. What is their answer to the manticore? Anything comparable?

I chose the CTX but only because I have a Deus 2. In my opinion Deus 2 and Manticore are very close.

With my whites I could use the 300mm coil and pinpoint a dime 6” down with ease. The ATPro all I seem to get are pennies. Maybe it’s just me not knowing the detector well enough or maybe it’s just not the detector for me. Best I can remember the notch discrimination and the audio were just second to none on the whites vs the ATPro. I will keep you guys posted on which one I choose. Thanks for all your help

First off, Big welcome to the Friendly Detecting forum. Pevehouse where are you located and what kind of detecting are you interested in.
My advice is buying the best detector your budget will allow. But limit your choice to the big name manufactures. I went from the Minelab E-Trac to the Nokta Legend and couldn't be happier. Remember, it's not the detector you use, it's how you use the detector you have. :waytogo:

Yes sir, I believe that

yes sir. It’s all about how you use the detector. They man that got me addicted to detecting could take a fisher price toy detector and find gold. I’m not there yet, lol. To answer your questions, I’m in Auburn, Alabama. I’m mainly interested in coin shooting however there are plenty of good places to hunt for relics around here. Mostly addicted to finding silver, lol

We have a lot of old home places around here. The soil can be anything from high trash to red clay to clean black topsoil

Nokta legend is very comparable to the Manticore, Deus and Minelab machines. At about half the price. I'll probably get some flack for my opinion. I've never based a purchasing decision on the price, I've spent stupid money on Maclaren's, Mercedes and other frivolous items and never regretted it. Take it back, the Maclaren was stolen 3 times and that was a DUMB car to purchase and park on a public street.

Buy a Manticore, great machine. Buy a Deus or Minelab or Legend. All great machines that will satisfy all your needs and find metal. Keep us pegged.

Will do. I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on the Manticore. It will be the first minelab I have ever touched so it will be fun learning the machine as well as honing my skills. My daughter will be thrilled that she got the ATPro. Will be a big step up for her as well. I appreciate everyone’s time and expertise and I’m looking forward to the new friendships on here as well. I will keep everyone posted as to how things are going and hopefully be able to post some good finds. Thanks
