Amongst a bunch of lettering, it has "30mm dum pgu 16/a amoc agua date 8-75 " written on it. This is the bottom line and seems to be the most relevant. I would post a picture but I'm new to this forum and haven't quite found my way around yet. Really interested in finding out the background story of this, though! I've searched the internet and haven't uncovered much...

Dummy rounds are commonly used in military and law enforcement training. Such as situations where you are training someone on how to load and unload weapons or how to dislodge a "jammed" round. It is dangerous to use live rounds for these applications due to the possibility of striking the primer during training and detonating the round. Dummy bombs are also used to train pilots and other personnel on bomber aircraft to basically "target practice" from the air without the round detonating on impact. Basically, they would drop the rounds and then measure how close they were to the target and it helps the personnel to learn trajectories of drop bombs and how wind currents affect the trajectories. Of course, now a lot of the bombs are equipped with gps so that they guide themselves to the target. Dummy rounds can be quite collectible to military collectors because they (unlike some actual live rounds) do not require any special licenses or permits to obtain or possess.
