My detector is soooo heavy!

The coil should be as near your shoes, figuratively speaking, in mid swing as comfortable, and near grass scrubbing low from left to right and back. I've hunted with people who extended the coil out to as much as 30 degrees and more, and I always thought, WHUT? Even the lightest machine would tell you about that arc in time with fatigue, plus the low yields. Simple logic.

Let's say that swinging that fast works just as well, there is still the issue of people who do that tend to miss several inches of dirt between swings. I can pull up many videos of paystreak doing just that. I happened to be on Virginia Beach back in August. I didn't take my detector because I was on vacation with the family. I saw two people detecting the whole time. One was hunting with a CTX 3030 and swinging a foot off the ground and the other was using an Equinox and plowing sand with the coil right between the people laying on their towels.

A lot of posts in this thread are combining swinging fast with swinging high, as if the two go hand in hand. It's possible to swing fast and low :)

Anyway, my points regarding swing speed, assume that the hunter isn't doing a head scratching high swing.

I wouldn't have believed your story if I had never witnessed it myself...and I've witnessed it a few times.

Do you Rattlehead, or anyone else for that matter, have any idea why some hunters do that? The only thing I can think of, is that they don't even have kindergarten level knowdelge of how a metal detcor works.
I have no idea. I always thought it was a newb thing, but this guy was swinging an Equinox 800 and talked like he's been detecting for years. I see newbies doing that sort of thing all the time, but it was sort of strange to see a person who claims to be a veteran hunter doing it. Honestly, the guy seemed like a know-it-all, so maybe nobody ever bothered to tell him his technique sucks. Or maybe he just didn't listen. Either way, I highly doubt he finds much old stuff swinging like that.

Occasionally I will see someone swing fast and low however I can't recall a time when I have seen someone swing way off the ground without doing it at break neck speed.

I have no issues believing it. Nothing against this forum in particular nor anyone specific, but there are a handful of people here like that too who simply think being in the hobby a long time means they are really good at detecting. I am always reading statements posted here and elsewhere that are supported via the assertion that they have been detecting a long time and therefore know best.

But we also all know people who for example have been driving a car for their entire lives and are still bad at it. Total time spent doing something means nothing if you have a closed mind, an unwillingness to learn, and don't actively engage in meaningful practice and growth. Once you think you are an expert at something, then you tend to stop learning.

Swinging high, at any speed is senseless, fast or slow, unless you are deciding if you are over a large target. Otherwise it is senseless IMPO

Unknown. But ask yourself, how many soft cover books have been out on the market on "How to be Sucessful at Metal Detecting" . I do believe I have read my share and still find something I can use and didn't know was there. If you can read, you can learn.:waytogo: JMHO.

as to weight none of these detectors are heavy to me... I laugh at the complaints I read about detecting being heavy...
Oh I wasn't complaining. I was using it as a metaphor that I couldn't hold my coil up but in reality I'm like you and scrub the ground. :waytogo:

I have to disagree with that. I keep my coil at least a foot away from my shoes, the main reason is I am also a prospector, can't tell you how many times ,during recovering a target, I will keep digging deeper and deeper, then realize my detector is picking up my phone that is in my pocket.. If I put on my 18x12 coil it has no problem picking up the rings in my boots.
