So yesterday, I wanted to take my manticore to my kids' old elementary school. It's super close by and I've pounded it to death over the years. Lots of good memories there, between the kids, walking the dogs, and of course, learning four different metal detectors.

Guys were working on the school yesterday, so I hit a park/woods nearby. Got skunked. Today nobody was working, so I got myself out there...even though it was a miserable 90 degrees.

The manticore's first trip to that school in ATHC mode was great! The school goes back to the 1950s (a different school than where I found the LC a couple of days ago). In the past, I've found a couple of mercs there, a bunch of wheats, and my first and only V nickel. But those finds were a long time ago, and my clad count there has severely dropped off in the past year or two.

Well, today things turned around very nicely. Ended up with just over $3 in clad, and this little ticket...

It's been a long time since I found my last merc.

My theory is that the manticore is finding all the on-edge coins that my other detectors missed over the years. Most of the quarters I dug were about 4 numbers lower than what I'm used to. But the merc was definitely in a spot I haven't spent much time searching. Pretty sure my ace 250 would have found it just as easily.

Thanks for looking everyone... GL & HH!

Hang about - you got skunked?

Is that slang for something or you actually got stunk by a skunk?

I'm in Australia and only have to worry about snakes/spiders/kangaroos and drop bears so I'm curious.

Took a skunk or got skunked is a term for no keepers on a hunt. More importantly no coins is my threshold for taking a skunk. Fortunately it doesn't happen too often. I remember some of the old diehards when I was new here would considerate it a skunk if no silver coins were found.:):surrender:

Hahaha...i appreciate your concern!
Like Mark said, I consider it a skunk hunt if I don't even find a corroded zinc one cent coin. I'll make an exception if I find a decent piece of junk jewelery though. You can have all those venomous creatures down under! 😂
But I definitely want to visit someday. One of the best radio shows I ever listened to (on the internet) was Music From Foggy Hollow with Mike Kear. Found it by dumb luck one day. I had no idea that bluegrass music even existed outside of the USA, let alone Australia!
