your right i was thinking that because of the raised end. thats what made me think it was an older round.

Correction... FA is Franklin Arsenal outta PA, not sure about the 8 and 02, maybe MFG date?

mabe the frankfurt armory ive heard of them but do they still make rounds with raised ends like that?

The raised end usually makes the round designation have a R, for example, 7.62x54R, the R meaning Rimmed (if I'm not mistaken), and come to think of it, it does look like it could be that same cartridge.

It's Frankford Arsenal, not franklin or frankfurt :) The numbers are most likely month and the year of manufacture. Looks bit odd to be a 54R, the bottleneck looks too small. Oh and the month/year numbering system is for pre-WW1 rounds only.

The cartridge looks like a 30-30 to me. Did the military ever use that round, so that it would have been produced at the Frankfort Arsenal?

Good call on that Tom... a 30-30 would definitely foot the bill as well. 30-30 aka 7.62x51R seems like a very good candidate.

However I don't believe they were in regular use until maybe the VERY late 1890s or early 1900s. And even still, this day in age it is a very popular hunting round.
