Howdy All - Finally got out today to an 1880's farmhouse, no coins found but a few decent relics:

1) Lots of ceramic and clear glass from a small garbage dump. Also found lots of cast iron pieces not shown.

2) UMC New Club No 12 Star Primer, Winchester New Rival No 12.

3) Heart pendant or button.

4) Train button, no other markings on this one.

5) Our best find, an "EXCELSIOR" military? button.

I haven't tried to look up the buttons yet but I think the Excelcior will be documented. Any ideas out there on the train button? Thanks for looking and good luck out there. C9

"Excelsior" is the New York militia motto and the button looks to be a post civil war staff officer's militia kind . a very nice piece and in great shape ,congrats. the train button (without seeing the back) looks like an older one maybe a "jacksonian button" as it has that look . very nice hunt.

Yo Copper Head - Thanks for the reply, others I have shown the eagle button to agree that it is NY Militia but we cannot pin down a date.

Regarding the "train" button, what is meant by "jacksonian button"? There is nothing on the back see picture.

Thanks again. C9

jacksonian buttons are ornate or fancy ones from around the time when Andrew Jackson was president , more of a certain style than anything else . the Jacksonian name implies more of an era (1825 - 40's) than actually linked to the former president. they are almost all one piece buttons (brass or brass-alloy) with a large rounded border with a design or motif in the middle .yours may not be but does look similar to some i've seen .heres a link to some
