Bought 2 new MI4'S from Jeff at quality and as usual he hooked me up..
I been using the Garrett's forever but wanted to try something different to see if I can get more then 2 yrs and one month out of them before they start failing.. but anyway I opened one today and I noticed the charge cover was cracked on one of them ,so I compared them both and the other one seems to have a different texture/glossyer plastic cover (also the one that's cracked had a 5 digit serial followed by a letter E, ,which the other is just the 5 digit serial dont know if that means it has a different ,stronger plastic cover or not)
But as tight as these covers are , has anyone else have a cap/cover crack???
They are extremely tight to turn ...
I'll post a pic of the crack

Biggest problem with those XP pinpointers is they screw on so tight with little to no pressure,,and then you can’t get them off… I use one of those soda screw cap openers, they have like a rubber grip that gets the Mi4 open easily..but I’ve seen many posts of guys cracking and breaking them trying to get the cap off..

I overtightened one of mine like that last fall. It cracked just like yours. I'm not sure of the serial number but it's at least two years old.

I thought it was just a fluke, must be a little thin on the plastic there.

Oh that's a bummer. Got to be a manufacturing defect if there are numerous problems like this.

Yes I got ahold of the dealer and he contacted his distributor and was told xp had some problems with certain batches of caps.. so he said one will be in the mail today ..

May I be so bold as to offer a suggestion. Apply a thin film of silicon grease to the threads before screwing the cap on. Dual purpose, sealing the threads and making it easier to remove. Glad you will be getting a new cap.

Funny you mentioned that , I have a friend with one and he tried the lube and it didn't make a difference believ it or not.. says his is still tight as heck..gonna try anyway ..can't hurt

Well maybe it's the plastic itself. I have two chainsaws. One is a Craftsman and the other is a newer Echo. Both have very course gas caps, and both are extremely hard to take off. In fact the Craftsman I have to use a pair of Channel locks to loosen the cap. Why is that????? Maybe it is a dissimilar plastic thing at work.:?::?::?:

I have the MI6, and finger tighten only, never had a problem, been using for about 4-5 years now

My cap was also too tight. I removed the oring, but left the flat gasket on it, and it opens and closes much better. Seems like the oring seizes the cap. Should still be waterproof with the gasket. I don't submerge it though it seems the gasket should do the job.
