Headed back to Missoula today to take care of the unfinished permissions. Brought a friend with me, Wayne, who uses Nox 600. He has hardly had a chance to detect this year, so having done so well yesterday, I gave him the unfinished part of one yard, and part of another yard. Turned out well, he found 2 Silver Rosies and a Merc Dime. My new yards turned out to have re-done soil with some modern clad, mostly quarters, and only one wheat cent. I re-checked part of one of the permissions and found a 1925 Buffalo Nickel, my best coin of the day.

We headed south back towards home, and decided to stop enroute to check out a grassy area near an old Catholic Church. My friend had found a few silvers and Indian Head Cents there, so we thought it might be worth a try. He found a 1917 wheatie, and no coins for me, but I ran across an area toward the alley where there were tons of these large aluminum St. Joseph the Worker Catholic medallions. They sound really good on the AT Pro, like a silver quarter, and my friend had found some before. I pulled one out of the hole, stuck the Carrot back in and it went crazy in all directions! These medallions were everywhere, and it was really fun to keep snagging them in the dirt. They measure 1 1/4" across. I did find several that were melted, and the history of this vacant lot is that an old home and garage sat there, and they were burned down some time ago.

What I don't know and have not figured out yet is the connection between the Priests of the Sacred Heart, Hales Corners, Wisconsin, with a small Catholic church in Western Montana. Might make a few phone calls back to Swissconsin on Monday and see if I can find out. Research showed this order began in 1878, and that Hales Corners, WI became central to their organization in 1929. I think the medallions date from the 1960s.

Anyway, I really enjoyed racking these St. Joseph medallions up, I ended up with 62 of them in a fairly short amount of time, and swinging my AT Pro told me that there are more there. Nothing special but an unusual find, thank you for your interest!

Well... I did head back and spent about an hour there, found a few luggage tags marked on back from the same Catholic Order, also recovered another 70 or so St. Joseph medallions. More still there too!

Finding a stash of those would shoot my heart into defibs! Great find/story.

Thanks bottlecap4u! Yep... they come out nice and shiny, at least most of them, like pulling silver halves! Some show evidence of having gone thru the fire that burned the old garage down, so I think they may have been stored in a bag or two inside the garage.
