Is it a bomb?!?

A friend found these at a 100-year-old farm house. Not detecting but by digging.

Amongst a lot of junk including car parts.

He thought they looked dangerous. I'm on my way to take a look.

Looked like some kind of a counterweight to me. Any ideas?

He described them as heavy, maybe five pounds each, but not necessarily solid.

Here is a photo. and a photo of what looks like a small compact. My friend bought this 100-year-old house and is turning it into a vacation rental. i found his property stakes a month or so ago.

I found some canning lids and a lot of can slaw.

I should trade in my detector for a pitchfork and a rototiller. That is what he found these items with!

he called the sheriff's department and they sent a deputy and she called in a more expert deputy who had not arrived when i left.

any ideas?

Well, I don’t know. We played serious lawn darts in PA. My guess would be a counterweight.

There are two of them. Sheriff's deputy ruled them harmless. My thought was some kind of counterweight too for a barn door or whatever. Compact is cute too.

I can understand him thinking it was a bomb, it does look a lot like some WW2 mortar rounds.

Looks like a mortar round I googled picture it said same thing.

This is one of those situations where I would completely ignore the Deputy, err on the side caution, and treat them as possible mortar bombs....

Yeah, most "experts" are self appointed, and far from expert. I posted in another thread about finding munitions and calling the PD. One of the responding officers decided it would be a good idea to tap on my find with a metal flashlight. Not a real confidence inspiring moment.

It doesn’t take an expert to realize that that’s not a bomb, mortar round or any other explosive device

This is one of those situations where I would completely ignore the Deputy, err on the side caution, and treat them as possible mortar bombs....

The responding deputy called in another deputy who was 40 miles away, saying he was their bomb specialist. They were not cavalier about it.

That was my first thought. A 60mm practice round.
