After reading, and sometimes adding a bit, to this great forum I finally got my own detector today. I bought a White's Prizm III from a local dealer who was great. If you live around Ottumwa, you can feel good about visiting VOSS EQUIPMENT & RENTAL.

The owner told me the new Prizms were coming in with free headphones, so he ordered mine this last weekend so I could have a pair. He also threw in a MD apron, a 8" probe and a digging tool for free. White's also is giving out Garrett's book on detecting, so I walked away with my hands full!

I got home in time with enough light to try it out, but it wasn't in the cards. 10 miles from town we hit rain and then all heck broke loose. We are in the middle of T-storms and tornado watches, so needless to say hunting coins on the floor of my garage was all I got around to. That said, I already have plans to hit a number of sites over the next few days and espexially this weekend, weather permitting.

In the time leading up to my buy I have been contacting people regarding permission to hunt. I even got permission from the city to hunt all parks in the area! I truthfully thought it would be harder, but with the advice I read on this forum evrything went great.

I just want to thank all of you who take the time to post your experience, knowledge, and opinions for newbies like me to read. You are a real credit to the hobby, and if I am half as successful at hunting as you guys have been friendly, I'll be pulling silver out by the handfuls!

Welcome to the Forum and I look forward to your find's. Congrat's on your detector and getting permission in the park's. There a great place to start with your detector.

Sounds like you have a plan for real. Learn the PrizmIII and what it's telling you. The pinpoint on it is great. Happy hunting and make your own luck.

NICE! Sounds like you are on your way to a good time.....

You gotta get a dance down pat for those great finds! <jk>

Please post your finds ... everyone is always interested in seeing what other people find, even if you think it's an interesting piece of junk. Never throw something away unless you know it is truly worthy of the trash bin.

Good luck and HH!!

I'm hep to that, Snowy!!!
My boss dug a "disc" up that had a couple letters stamped on it, and threw it over his shoulder thinkin' it was an engine plug or something.
6 months later, he realized that he had a (maybe, hard-time) token that was worth big bucks!!!
To this day, he's kickin' his own butt 'cause he can't remember WHERE he was detectin' at the time...! :(

Congrats JPB. You are gonna love that machine. Sounds like you are all set up for hunting too. Now if the weather would just co-operate for you. The storms you are having now are supposed to hit us here by midnight. Good luck, and HH.

Congrats on getting your new detector. The Prizms are good machines. Sounds like you off to a good start just keep us up to date on your finds. GL

Welcome and good luck. Must have been the dealer throwing in the GARRETT book. Whites would never do it. Post us some finds. Ask some questions.HAVE SOME FUN !!!!!

I thought I would post my first finds to this thread as well.  I left work a few hours early since the weather has cleared up.  It's still pretty damp, but I thought I would try anyway.  After dinking around my yard for a bit I went to one of the sites I scouted out.  I chose it because I knew it would at least have some "junk" to find so I could get used to honing in with my prizm.  My first find was a piece of crumpled tin.  A few minutes later I found my first tab...a thing of beauty...I think I'll have it mounted (not).  I then found two soda cans; 1 mountain dew from a few years back and a Schlitz buried at 6 inches under the ground.  The Schlitz threw me for a loop as it was actually much deeper than I was expecting based on the readout.  My last find was a screw top from a soda bottle, circa 1990 based on the expiration date of the promo on top.

All and all a horrible 45 minutes if I had been at this for a few years, but since it was my first real time out, it was just fun to find something.  Still learning how to pinpoint in on the item and be sure of where to cut the plug, but I hope to get out a few more times this weekend, weather permitting.

I'm posting a picture...I'm hoping subsequent ones will show something of value!

It's great that you got out and had fun. That's what this hobby is about. Use each outing to learn something new, that makes each hunt productive and fun. GL

Hey, welcome to the forum and I'm glad to hear you got a MD. Don't worry about the junk, there's a pot of gold at the end of the coil too. I dug 19 bottle caps today  but I sure do like those two IH's I dug up between them 19 bottle caps
