Grade school finds??

I'm getting ready to search a grade school that probably openned in the 1940's and is getting ready to be torn down later this month. It had grades 1 thru 6 originally, and then changed to a 7th grade, then 6th grade before it closed. I wondered what all of you have found when searching the grade schools from around that era. Comments anyone??

I hunt a grade school quite a bit that was built in the mid-60s, and I've found a couple of silver rings, one silver rosie, several wheat pennies, and a bunch of clad. I'd think your school has excellent possibilities, unless it's been hunted a lot over the years, like the school I hunt has been, but nothing is ever hunted out. Your lucky to have a school that old that has grass, at least around KC, all the old schools were surrounded by asphalt playgrounds, with the only grass being out by the sidewalk. Good Luck!

Thanks Ed! I actually went to this school when I was in the 7th grade! Long time ago! There is so much grass to work I don't know if I will get it all done before they start construction. The school has a tennis court area, and a baseball area, as well as large grassy areas all around the school. In order for the City to get a grant to tear down the building, it has to be done by the end of August. I'm taking tomorrow off because I'm having a nervous breakdown....... my son and his wife and my only grandaughter (age 2) are moving to Pennsylvania, and they leave in the morning. I figured if I went MD'ing it would keep me from crying all day! Coffeyville is in SE Kansas. Our large rodeo is in two weeks, so I am going to try to hunt that area as well. I don't really think anyone has ever hunted the gradeschool, but I'm sure they have the park where the rodeo is at. Hope it isn't too hot, 104 here today, hope it was cooler in your neck of the woods!:spin:

It wasn't too much cooler: 98 with 51% humidity.

Check these spots

look for where kids used to wait for the bus.

Big trees that used to be little and were climbable

possible spots were kids had class outside....we did in the 60's I had several hippy teachers...

spots were old playground used to be......seeif you can find an old picture when they first opened....

Don't forget to get there after they rake some of the lawn away from the demolition!!! When they take off a couple of inches, you will get many more solid readings. The older stuff is down a bit and grass always hides some signals. Keep us posted. HH

Here's hoping no other MD'ers have hit the place!

Just one grade school has been good to me as I found one gold (chipped) diamond ring, a silver quarter, silver medallion and a whopping 235 (clad) quarters! The other school about 1 mile away? 19 quarters LOL.

Someone had mentioned tress and I agree. Visualize what a tree would have looked like 50-60 years earlier and hope it was a good climbing tree where the kids could hang upside down on the branches ;0)
