Great balls of fire you probably heard this a dozen times ,but here we go again.I have a close friend and interested in buying a good all around working detector. He uses my back up detector ,but wants his own.He wants to spend $400 - $500 and wants a good warranty with a good place for reasonable repairs. So at this point seems he wants a detector that has excellent workmanship and has few problems.
Hmmm, will not touch this with a 10 foot pole :?:. I do not think he is interested in a very deep detecting. I guess he wants an all purpose hunting detector he is in his early 60's. I need some feed back for him so he can make a purchase soon.:oldguy:

Over the last 50 years in the hobby, I've needed warranty service twice. Once, back in the mid 80's I had a White's capacitor go bad due to hunting in below freezing temps, and one other time, I had a bad Minelab coil that wasn't under warranty, but they sent me a new one anyway. That was in the 2010's. I think way too much emphasis is put on the warranty, and not enough on how the unit feels, functions and finds. Most any modern day unit would probably be an excellent choice, and he could spend less than his budget for a machine with performance that I couldn't have bought for any amount of money when I started out.

Like everyone, I have my own biases on what to buy starting out. For me, any Minelab Vanquish, Xterra Pro or a used Equinox 600/800, would probably serve him well with excellent performance, lightweight and be beyond any need to upgrade in the near future, if at all. And, if after hunting for awhile, he decides the hobby isn't for him, he's not going to take a beating on a resale.

Again, just my biased opinion after 50+ years. Others will have totally opposite suggestions and thoughts on the subject.

Wish him good luck with whatever he chooses...

I really like the Minelab Vanquish 540. Sophisticated for the price, yet can be used in very easy mode. I'd get the Pro pack for an extra hundred because unless your bud already has it it comes with well over 100 $$ worth of necessities such as a minelab pinpointer that retails for over $100 bucks, digging tool and other goodies that he'll probably buy too, the red back light, bluetooth head phones (the 440 doesn't have either). I was using junk, and two very experienced guys recommended this and I've had no remorse or regrets since. If your bud already has all of the tools he can just get the detector and coils by themselves. For the price, I'd definetely go with the 540 over the 440 and he'll still come in at pretty much his budget. This is tough, because there are so many choices in this price range that would be good, also. But he may never "outgrow" the 540, then again...
