hi,

i found this at the park today. it looks the same on both sides.

i don't know what its for. i thought it might be for a ladies dress or something.

it looks like some kind of ballast.

can anyone tell me what it really is?

its a fishin sinker ;)

its the same kind i use for catfishing in heavy current
 
It is a dress hem ballast, these were sewed into the hems of ladies dresses back in the late 1800's to keep the summer breezes from embarrassing them in public places. The more religious a woman was the larger the ballasts she would sew into her hems. A great piece of Americana!

i hate to shoot down a legend however the park where i found it is only about ten years old.

i thought it might be hem balast from a cocktail waitress dress or something like that. i am more confident that it is a fishing sinker even though the nearest fishing hole is about 40 miles from here (lake mead). (plus noone fishes in lake mead)

perhaps they use fishing sinkers in those skirts. i know chanel uses chain.
