Some careful research led me to a great early 1800s site but unfortunately it was already hunted out. I'm sharing some pics anyway because though I came away empty handed, I did thoroughly enjoy walking around and swinging at this beautiful old homesite. I took a few pics for everyone to enjoy...
Here's the family cemetery, which is what led me to the site. The earliest legible stone I found was 1830. Its a bit sad to see a forgotten burial ground in such disrepair.
Here's a shot of the cellar hole from the side. You can see the steps leading down to the cellar at the far end.
Here's the cellar hole from the front. The slab at lower left would have been the "front step."
Directly across from the front of the house was this small but well-built bank barn. Really some gorgeous stone work.
In addition there were lots of stone walls like the ones below. I'm not sure what they were doing here - the site looks much too rocky to be plowing and farming. Perhaps they were raising livestock.
This was my first hint that I wasn't the first one to detect this place. I found lots of iron sitting on rocks during my time there.
Well, that's it. Though I have no finds to show, I hope some of you enjoyed this little walk through history. I may go back when the vegetation dies back and give it another go.
