I had to run a few chores in Lewiston yesterday, Saturday morning, and had about a 3 hour window to detect before rain was coming in. Packed the AT Pro and managed to get 5 permissions, all homes were shown on my 1928 Lewiston Sanborn map. The first was a 1921 home, small front yard, only a couple of wheat cents. Caught the neighbor coming home, got the ok, and only a few wheat cents. A couple of houses away, the nice young lady gave me permission for her home, decent yard size, but only more wheat cents. As I walked down the curb (I detected it with typical zero finds other than clad) I noticed that some machinery had scraped a front yard area (home was gone) and the curb strip out front. Roots from plants and trees were showing and the dirt was nice and powdery. The lot was being turned into a parking lot, mostly already graveled but a small area out front was just plain dirt and roots. Started in and began to find wheat cents, then a cool 1931 dog's head shaped Lewiston dog tag. More wheaties, and finally my only silver for the day, a 1919 worn Merc Dime. Another high tone with a bit of iron grunt gave me a really cool 1932 Lewiston dog tag, followed by a Buffalo Nickel, rifle cartridge, old button, lead ball, and a few more wheat cents. The torn up curb gave more wheaties. I ended up with 20 wheat cents and only one silver, a pretty poor ratio but no complaints as I did get one shiny! The last yard to detect was 1920s in a different area of town, two wheat cents were all that were found. Pictures follow, thank you for your interest!

Good job, you never get skunked do you?

Mark in Michigan
Thanks Mark! I usually do come home with at least one Silver Coin or Sterling Ring, but once in a long while I do get skunked on the shiny stuff. I pretty much always at least come home with something cool, interesting, or historic. While I was happy to get that one silver, the Lewiston Dog Tags are my favorite finds of this hunt!

Thank you MDM!

Thank you Diggerjonny!

Thank you rcornell!

Wow... you sure have a beauty of a dog tag there, 1902 and #12!
A tag collector here in Michigan wanted to buy it, his book records the oldest known for each township. This one replaced the prior earliest by 10 years. The home owner, in her 90s said her husband’s parents bought the farm in 1898, so this belonged to a family pet. She let me keep it and I’ll never sell it.

Great story, and yep, some things have such a great back story that they need to be kept!
I love old vintage dog license tags.
Thank Tom, me too!

Great finds David. Dog tags are cool. I remember finding low # ones in Missoula with you.
Thank you Josh! Yep, we did get some neat early Missoula tags, I still have mine in the album I put together for each year's finds. Hope all is good for you!

I usually hate finding modern dog tags, but those older pre 1940 ones are really cool!!
I agree, the modern tags with Rabies notes, modern phone number etc go into my "kind of junk" section. The older ones are really cool and very welcome!
