I used my 250 for the first time in anger today (fitted with 12? coil), results were inconclusive.
There were 95 people at the rally, but they were big fields, so nobody got in each others way. There was a hedge dividing the two main fields, which is where I started (this was a bad move).
I was getting signals all over the place, even with the coil in the air. I thought at first, there was something wrong with the Garrett, but found later that there were underground cables causing the problem. It affected everyone?s machines.
Once away from this area, things improved, and I was able to turn up the sensitivity. I found the larger coil a bit on the heavy side, so may have to fix up a bungee to take the weight, or use the standard coil. I didn?t find anything of note, but I wasn?t the only one, finds were thin on (in) the ground.
This machine is going to take a bit of getting used to, but reading all the positive reports, I?m sure it won?t take long.

Here?s a couple of pictures. First is at the start of the rally, and the second is a hammered gold noble, bent in half. This was the best find of the day.

Sounds like besides the electric interferrence, you still had a good time of it. Finding that gold coin would be sweet. :D

I should have made it clear, that I didn't find that gold coin :(
If only !

Cooooool a Gold coin, my congrates to the finder, I dream of a hunt in England some time soon for at least a week or two! H.H.:-)

It now turns out that the gold coin wasn't a Noble. I'm told it is probably a foreign coin. Still, gold is gold, I'd like to have found it wherever it' was from ;)

When these gold coins do turn up, they are very often bent in half. I imagine this is done deliberately, perhaps as an offering to guarantee a good crop ?

There is another theory as to why the coins were bent in half. It's reckoned its so you could reach into your pocket or purse and know you had a gold coin, without having to show others what you had.

Who knows ?

Metal Detectors
There are no restrictions to use in a metal detector for leisure in France. I spoke to M. HERMENT, president of the Association française des prospecteurs, "metal detectors are allowed in France, only archaeological searches require special permission." If you are in any doubts you can contact the *mairie where you are searching for details of any areas prohibited due to archaeological sites. If you find anything which may be of significant public interest you should also report this to the *mairie. The associations website also has links to specific legal text and more.

When I spoke to M. Herment he was extremely helpful and well worth a visit to their website.

Thanks for that info (seems to be some cross thread posting :D )

I'll post that on the UK forum if you don't mind. Where the subject of detecting in France arose.

Although there don't seem to be restrictions, do you still need to buy a permit ?

gold coin

That gold coin is in half, the other piece might still be in that field somewhere?
