After what seems like forever I’ve finally started to find older stuff. Started the other day at an older ballfield when I found a couple of nickels in the early 40’s then followed that with a very nice 1925 wheatie. Sweet. Went back today and again started with a 1940 nickel then a 1941 nickel. Very next target on the 900 rang up a solid 64 @8” tried another angle and rang 64-65 but very clear. I was sure it was going to be can slaw or similar trash. I dug it anyway. Out came my very first ever Indian Head Penny in pretty good shape but unfortunately I cant make out any of the date. Funny part is this ballfield was built in 1947 but I have found several coins several years earlier. Now by alot of peoples standards these arent huge finds but to me theyre great. Now to find some Older silver!

Oh yeah! I remember my first good spot - turned up early wheats then an IHP. Soon after that a V nickel, then a silver Rosie and a Walker.... keep hunting!!

Congrats on your first Ihp. Always a treat when one shows up. Next to a silver coin and Ihp is my favorite find. Good luck. Mark

Excellent finds. Old ball fields have been good to me. Remember about coin age versus location age...most people with coins in their pockets could be carrying coins that range in age from 1-20 years or more old. That's pretty common, even today. I periodically look at the vintage of coins I get as change at the grocery store, Target, etc. What I typically have in hand are coins from the 90's to 2022, and sometimes earlier. I've found coins in my own yard that are 40 years older than the house, and I figure that these older coins could have been dropped by someone decades after their minting. Nice finds. Love the IHPs.

Most excellent! They are few and far between these days and it's always exciting to see one surface. I remember my first one. I was detecting in the town north of us and I got a good solid penny tone. Dug about five inches and out popped a BENT 1900 IHP. I did straighten it and still have it today. Congrats.

I have a copy of the 1959 Blue Book, and it says something like "There are still a considerable amount of V nickels in circulation today." I call cap on that, no way in hell that was real. That statement doesn't show up in the 1964 version.

Nice find! Sounds like you have a good spot with some older stuff. If you are finding ihp's and V nickels, there's probably also some barber's and mercs in the area. The oldest official city park in my town was built in 1955, but my grandpa told me people used it as a park and gathering place long before that. So you never know what might be in some of these parks...

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Great IHP. Took me years to find my first one. Odd I found barber dime quarter and even barber half before I ever found a IHP. Way to go. Good luck on next trip there. Place has potential with finds you are getting

IHP's are tough to find depending on location. I have only found a dozen or so in all the years I have been detecting. And yes, it is a treat to see one pop up in your plug.

Little update on the ball park. I went back for about 3 hours before the kids show up. I found a couple more wheaties 1941 oldest. 4 nickels in the early 40's and then found a 1964 silver Rosie dime. I's funny how I have only found 3 silver coins and all three are 1964 Rosie dimes in 2 different locations 30 miles apart lol. I've been over the whole ball field twice and all of the area around it. I'll probably go again after the weather clears up supposed to be stormy here later today and tonight so spending some time looking for another promising site.

made it back to the ball field and found a little bit of clad but was quickly cut short as the kiddo's shows up for ball practice so I scrammed. I finally got permission to hunt a permission I've been chasing for awhile an old farmhouse property. The only condition they placed on me was there is a class ring that was lost there by a lady that is now 91 and they really hope it turns up for her. I spent a couple hours out there but the weeds are tall and thick and I got munched pretty bad by chiggers so going to wait till late fall to go back to that one maybe take my mower out and mow the property first.
