I’ve never been one to detect curb strips because I didn’t want confrontations with homeowners that don’t realize they don’t own the curb strips. Well today I was at the park with a buddy and across the street are some older houses with a curb strip maybe 5 foot wide and I said screw it I'm gonna detect them.
Wouldn’t you know the very first house a older lady comes out on her porch saying I can’t do that in her yard and I said to her you own from your front porch up to the sidewalk and across the sidewalk is city property and I said call the cops and find out for yourself if you want to and kept on detecting! I ended up finding a 49 rosie, 5 wheaties, a chunky sterling ring and a red cross pin. Ty for looking and HH!

I’m getting desperate so I’m gonna just do it lol
Me too whisperer, I haven’t found a silver coin yet, there are so many skinny sidewalks in my general area I should just start hitting it. I’m just not the kind of person to make a spectacle of myself. But the more I get used to detecting the more I just say what the heck.

I'm going to play the homeowner's advocate here.

Of course, the homeowner doesn't own the curb strip, but they do take care of and maintain that grass. As such, it's totally understandable that they're going to be pissed off when seeing someone digging holes on it.

Sure, I can tell them it's public property and that my digging is legal, but the homeowner is going to understandably consider it disrespectful and destruction of something that they cherish. As such, I don't hunt residential curb strips.

Now to throw a whole monkey wrench into the notion of, "It's public property and my digging is legal". Well, read the bylaws of your city and you'll find that digging on any public property is illegal. However, it's tolerated in most parks, playgrounds, etc, provided that the digging is done with tact and care.

There are no ordinances against digging in public property in my city of Danville va, matter of fact they issue detecting permits for the parks here

In other words, it's illegal without that permit. What is the purpose of that permit, and what does it entail?

Also, are you certain there are no ordinances or bylaws about digging on public property? Perhaps it's in a county bylaw for your area? I mean, if there wasn't such a bylaw, and someone went into a park and started digging holes, then a bylaw would be written up real quick.

Keep talking like that and you'll be summoning Tom, it's like saying Beetlejuice 3 times.

lol

Tom doesn't even have to see the thread, or even be logged into FMDF. If someone writes about permissions and legalities, he senses it telepathically

Outstanding finds for sure. That is a nice chunky silver ring. All your finds are awesome. I have been there as well. Hunting CS and a home owner came up to me and told me to leave or he would call the police. I informed him of the law and of course he didn't believe me. He went in the call the law and I kept hunting. He never returned. I do feel for those people though. Even though the property owner doesn't own that strip, they are however required to keep it up. At least around here anyway.

Ty, yea it’s a fine line I guess

Curbs are one of the last public spots that haven't been pounded. They are definitely great for hunting as shown by your finds. 925 ring and a handful of old coins, very nice!

More often than not, when I've daytime hunted curbs I get confronted/cops called. I'll explain they are public and no ordinance against hunting them. When I first started I would stand my ground, but now days if they persist I'll just move on. But now I usually just hunt them at night or early morning and rarely get bothered.

I’m surprised you don’t get bothered at night, seems like people would really be wary of some dude in front of their house at night
