Near my house is an historic road. The plate on the rock reads "Woods Road created 1780 by revolutionary war troops under General Laffeyette While manning outposts to watch British troop movements" About 12 acres of woods are untouched. George Washington spent a lot of time at Dey Mansion about 5 miles away. My questions:1 What coins were in use at that time? 2 How deep can they be?

Probably Brit coins. Depth? Never know. You can use a rule of thumb though. For every 40 yrs there will be 1 inch of organic matter deposited. That assumes that it is just grass and leaves. Could be more or less depending on rainfall and possible flooding. So you are looking at 6 inches - plus or minus.

Good luck!
