I've been detecting since 1983 and have always used both tones and VDI. Why would you consider limiting the input from your detector by focusing on only one aspect of its abilities? If you get a good tone only, dig it. If you get a good VDI only, dig it. If you get both, dig it. :mder:

I'd say it depends on how much trash is in the ground and what you're hunting for.

For example, in parks filled with aluminum trash and other trash, there will be countless trash targets that sound perfect. If I went by sound quality alone, I might as well call myself a trash digger, because that is most of what I'd be digging. In that same park, if I only dug high conductor coin IDs, I would get mostly coins.

On the other hand, if I was hunting an old site that wasn't filled with modern trash, I wouldn't care about ID. I would dig everything that gave a nonferrous tone. Heck, I'd even dig the deepest iron tones, because fringe depth nonferrous stuff will sound and ID as ferrous.

I'm with Diga on this, that it depends on the location. When I hunt parks, I use my 5-tone program. There is so much trash I'd spend all my time looking at the VDI if I used it. I have my highest tone set for coins. If I hear that tone, I might look at the VDI, and I might not.

Now in my tot lots I recover all tones. I also use the VDI just to help verify what I think it is. This helps me when I hunt the dirt.

I’ve been using two program on my dues 2, set the break at 85. Any tone that breaks though gets investigated. Just how I hunt my old park full of aluminum junk.

I am always open to one or both tones or vdi etc. Have heard some.people in posts say yeah I only use tones have forever best way to etc.
