Greetings! This sure seems to be a great group here and I'm looking forward sharing my bad sense of humor with the community (and continuing to learn). Here's the requested introduction so you can see just how bad it can get ...
THE SELF INTRODUCTION?
While I haven't held a metal detector in 25 years, it seems that I'm getting back into it, and then some. I've spent the last 3-4 months educating my wife (who has no interest yet) about all of the little things I've learned reading this site and others, in hopes that sharing this information will help me remember some if it a little longer!
I live in California near the coast, and love the idea of hunting for gold nuggets. With that in mind I have a gold bug 2 on order. Recognizing that I'll have far far more opportunities to detect parks / beaches / farms where I live I'll have a second detector darn soon. And then it'll be all work (play!) finding trinkets to justify this all to the aforementioned wife.
THE QUESTION:
Okay - you made it this far, I should get to the second part of my subject line. I haven't done much research on the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, or Western Nevada I suppose. I'm going to be in Mammoth over Memorial Day. Are there any suggestions for publically accessable areas where one can detect within 90ish minutes of Mammoth Lakes? I've got my BLM maps on order, so at worst I'll check online and with the BLM for unclaimed BLM land that has potential, but I'm always up for suggestions.
(is there a spot online that shows BLM lands?)
Thanks much - happy hunting.
