I have been working a site that continues to produce a wide assortment of interesting artifacts. They include now a dozen Counterfeit Nickels, silver thimble, skeleton keys, intact pewter whistle and this button. Check out the Counterfeit Nickels post to see photos of all that.
This button was found after dark. I didn’t get a great look at it in the field due to using a headlamp but I felt it needed inspected later so in the good bag it went.
Got it home and cleaned up and discovered that it was a button all smashed and rolled up. After carefully getting it untangled from itself I was able to see an unusual eagle and shield on it. I have found Civil War buttons in the past but they have all been Union. This eagle I knew to be a drooped wing, indicating Confederate. Sure enough I was able to find what it was after searching online.
It is an Alabama Volunteer Corps Confederate button. I don’t know a lot about this button or group but did read that the Alabama Volunteer Corps was started to try and get militias to become more organized early in the war. Most ended up joining the Confederate Army however this Corps existed and this button is proof.
Now what it was doing in a very Union dominated area is the mystery I will get to continue researching!
Thanks for looking!
