Advice on learning the Manticore

You had too much notched out, glad you did the reset.
I have 1 program, it might be the fast where quite a bit is notched out, I use that in very trashy parks. The other programs I only change the iron bios settings, and tone for the nickle range. being hard of hearing for low tones, I will miss a nickle unless it screams at me, it is a global setting if you change it, you will also hear the pull tabs that fall in the range, but you can usually determine if is a pull tab, the bounce more, where as a nickle is usually 27-28. Buffalo nickles are a 25, my tone setting for the nickles is set to 25-29, small range.
Not sure if you find shield nickels in your area, but just a heads up: I've had some of those read as low as 22. They're just a little smaller in diameter than the other nickels which might explain it. I've also had some Buffalo nickels ring up at 23, while others ring up as high as 27. Seems like the ID range varies a lot on nickels. I accept 22-28 just to make sure I don't miss any.

Everything is as it was when I got it. When I get a new detector, the first thing I do is get used to running it completely factory before I fool with settings.

Back when. Just how accurate was the equipment used to mix the metals to make nickels ? A smidge off one way or the other percentage wise just might cause a slight difference in conductivity of nickel. How a detector sees it.
Yeah, the ole saying close enough for government work also might apply too.

I accept everything, it is just the tone setting that is cranked up. But if V nickels are 22, I may change the tone settings. Trashy parks, I only try to cherry pick, not worth the time digging garbage.

I see. It’s mostly the Shields I see reading lower but I have seen V and Buffalo nickels ring in around 23 as well. I hear ya on the trashy parks. I only dig deep signals in that range there.

Worn Buff's and Vs quite often come in at 22 and war nickels will hit to 29 for me. Thats my bin 2. I got so used to the pitch of 6 in 5 tone on the Equinox that I use it with the Manticore. Its a different tone but very distinct from a high tone, that in combination with max volume on bin 2 & 5 while lower different settings for the other 3 really help to alert me to the more desired targets. On bin 1 I do lower the pitch to 3.

What happens for me in trashy parks is the machine sounds like a machine gun, and makes it impossible to find targets, at least this way I walk away with something for my time. Here the trashy parks are in the older parts of town and usually have homeless encampments.

I will throw this in there too: if you don't have the M9 coil, that would be my next investment. It wouldn't hurt if the M9 was the coil that came with it from the factory, and then the 11 inch be the add-on coil. Putting the M9 on the Manticore reminded me a lot of the Sunray 8 inch coil for the Explorer and eTrac. It will probably never leave the end of my Manticore now.

Agree 100%!

I bought a package with my Manticore that came with M8, 11", and 15" coils. Is there any benefit to the M9 over the 8"? I have been using the 8" almost exclusively. I have tried to go back to 11" a few times but in the trashy areas I always resort to the 8".

I bought that same package. To me, the M9 is the perfect balance between the M8 & M11. It’s deeper and offers slightly more coverage than the M8, while still small enough to get into tight places. It’s lighter than both the M11 and the M8. Love it! I sold the M8 & M15. My M11 is hanging on the wall collecting dust.

Generally, coins will definitely show a small circular target on the center line to the far right of the graph. Signal will be repeatable and consistent numerically. Good targets can be masked by close metal objects, large iron can give high numbers with an irregular target shape, and depth can weaken the signal, but a high number on a small target is worth investigating.
God post and info here!

You can also try to run a single frequency too with the manticore. It will run smoother and false less in iron

I don't when relic hunting in and around a lot of iron

You may be surprised.

Also I run the 9 inch coil too and I find it plenty of deep too.

I do not use any disc settings and just run it wide open.

Good luck
