Just curious how many folks here are 70 yr. old or more, and have you had to modify your detecting style since father time has showed up. I'm 73 and for now still going strong. Only issue I really have is once I get down to dig a plug it takes me a couple try's to get vertical again.:rofl2: I do feel real lucky I can still do this and my wife is right there with me. I would have to say the time we spend swinging a coil may go down a little depending on how we are doing on finds. I don't know, an eight-hour hunt don't seem out of the question just yet.:yoda: We'll see this year.

My only major physical drawback while detecting now is I can only kneel on one knee since having a ā€œTotal Knee Replacementā€ at 62, twelve years ago. Trying to kneel using left knee is painful, so I just wear one knee pad now on my good knee. Not a big deal. I also wonder if listening to high-pitched detector tones with headphones on has caused the Tinnitus Iā€™ve had for maybe ten years. šŸ˜¬

Rods and screws in my back, shovel helps me get up. When prospecting my pick has a long handle which I use to get up, and also serves as a cane to keep balance walking up hills.

I'll turn 77 in March and can still hunt with no aches or pains but I can't hunt as long as I used to. I used to be able to hunt 6-8 hours in any weather, hot or cold, but now I generally limit my hunt to 2-3 hours at a time. I could do more if the site was really producing. If the temperature hits 80 or more I don't go out. Fortunately getting up or down is still no problem.
I've never smoked, I keep my weight under control.....145-150 pounds on a 6' frame and do a lot of walking for exercise. I think that those things have helped keep me in pretty good shape for my age.

Bob Oso that first pic, please tell me you didn't dig that plug your standing in:jawdrop::rofl2:. Sounds like we all are doing pretty good.

I'm 73 too, knees bad - when about 20, my Dad said we have family history of bad knees "and what it" now knee injuries, ligaments, cartilage ...
I can't knee down & have to bend over to find whatever in the dig holes LOL To set down on the ground, there better be a tree by me with a low limb to hoist me up... Oh-Well

If I could just find that one last 1943 copper cent, I would hire someone to hoist me up.:rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:

Just turned 70 in December, no real problem as far as getting around, probably the main difference I noticed over the past several years getting older is that I seem to be more sensitive to the real chilly weather.

Metal detecting is meant to be fun but if it so cold that the chill seems to go right thru you then it's harder to have fun when you feel miserable from being too cold :cold1:

Really hot days can limit your detecting time but you have to remember to stay hydrated and try not to be in the direct sun too long on the extra hot days. Also be alert if you start feeling woozy as it is a sign your blood pressure has dropped and you could be on the verge of heat exhaustion. No hobby is worth risking your health for so if I feel the heat is extreme enough I just wait for a milder day.

:laughing:hey, if it's a requirement like when we had to punch a time clock then that sure don't sound like casual fun:laughing:

....it's more fun when we each decide when to casually go on a detecting hunt if the weather is bearable

I'll be turning 72 in April. Did something to my left knee a few months ago. It seems to be almost back to normal and I don't think (a lot of the time) I will have a problem. Won't start hunting for a few more weeks anyway. I miss the cows and I know they miss me. Losing maybe 10-15 pounds would help too ... least that's what I've heard.

It could have helped you with the ringing in ears, but mine have rung since I was 27, every day non-stop but its part of the Meniere's disease I have.....

Well, KT buggered the right knee up years ago in a 3 wheeler accident and about 8 years ago buggered the left knee up, tearing both the inner and outer tendons, then when His Majesty came down with cancer and had to have a Super Port installed, that ended my swinging efforts due to being told do not do repetitive motion. So in 2013, I had recovered and had the port removed in July. Went back to start swinging 6 weeks later and wound up crawling back to the Royal Carriage due to bad knees, worn completely out...Oh Sure, I can pull myself up using nearby Totlot play equipment, but the old knees hurt too much to fool with it now at 73. I still have the mding spirit, but KT needs to find an enthusiastic assistant to do the kneeling and digging! Have yet to come across a volunteer for that job!

Knee operations are in the future, but since KT gets around ok and can, when necessary get down and back up, His Majesty is putting off any knee surgery until He is at least 80. Knee replacements are only good for about 15 years....and 80 will be good because KT does not figure to be still earth bound by 95! And He is never going to have it done a second time! Life is too short to be hung up that long.

I went into the Army at 19, figured I would not make to 21. got married a couple of times and figured one of my ex's would do me in (1 tried) and I would not live past 30. Several car accidents while driving simi's , 1 near miss hauling houses (quit after 1 year) and I pushed my expiration date to 35. Since 1975, I would have trouble driving long distances, it was better having someone with me talking. Then before retiring I took a job teaching 100 miles away, and fell asleep on the freeway, after all those years they diagnosed me with sleep apnea. Rods now in my back, (last year). anyway my mother will be 95 soon, I guess there is still a chance, so now I pick ?? as the end date.

KT you sound like me except for the cancer. I opted to have a heart attack. But I'm good to go now. Look at it this way; we may be older, but we ain't done. I'm a Lexus trapped in the body of a model T. :rofl2:

all the males on KTā€™s side of the family have strong hearts, luck of genetics! So His Majesty can still ride the Royal Steed and looked at luxury for the Royal Coach as the major ride. Enjoy it almost every day! And searching for ā€œbargain silver coinsā€ on eBay, along with collecting fluorescent minerals, is keeping the olde brain cells active! :bouncy::laughing: and during daily living, KT is a people watcher, so it is fun to go to a cafe for lunch!

KT certainly understands that you feel like a Lexus in a Model T body, but remember even Model Ts are collectible!
